You go your whole life hoping that you are not pregnant because you’re too young, with the wrong guy, not married, just starting your career or just not ready. Now you are finally married to the perfect guy and are well established in your career, it’s time to have a baby. My husband Bryan and I had been actively trying for a baby for five months. Five months! Isn’t it supposed to be plug and play, have sex and the next morning you wake up prego? At this point, the control freak in me was starting to question everything. “Can I even get pregnant?, Do his boys swim?, Are my eggs shriveled?, Would we do in vitro?” I am a 29 year old healthy female, did I wait too long to “have sex and get pregnant?”.
I am sure there are many
crazy control freaks planners out there that got their calendars out to plan when the baby should arrive. For me, as a teacher, the baby MUST come in June so I have the summer off as part of my maternity leave. Well needless to say, things didn’t go as planned. For five months, I had been taking the prenatal vitamins, exercising, not drinking, and peeing on the fertility sticks to plan when to have sex and still I wasn’t pregnant. So I took a break, I put away the calendar and fertility sticks and each night sat down for a beer a few beers. One night before bed, after three beers, I went into the bathroom to pee. There staring at me was an unopened pregnancy test, I took it.
That night, December 10 2015, the test read “Pregnant”. I sat in the bathroom and sobbed, I was ecstatic and also concerned as I had just had 3 beers.
Side note: My OB later assured me that the baby would be fine just no more beer now that I am pregnant.
My husband Bryan was on the phone in the living room. He was talking to an old friend who he had not spoken to in a while. This gave me time to whip up a way to break the amazing news. I went into my office and grabbed a Christmas gift box and some tissue paper and grabbed my phone to record the reveal. I sat in the living room and patiently waited for Bryan to get off the phone. He was on the phone for an hour after I found out. I asked him politely and not so politely to get off the phone in so many ways. In the end, I just placed the box on his chest and glared from across the room. When he finally got off, he asked “What has gotten into you?” I simply replied, “Open your present.” With a little resistance, he finally opened the box. He looked at me and whispered, “You’re pregnant” with a big grin on his face. Followed by, “My boys swim!”
